""Trip-hop" was a term coined by the English music press in an attempt to characterize a new style of downtempo, jazz-, funk- and soul-influenced experimental breakbeat music which began to emerge around in 1993 on labels such as Mo' Wax, Ninja Tune and Wall of Sound. As the name suggests, trip hop was a variant of hip hop, using the same sampled drum breaks, but in a more experimental way, and with greater emphasis placed on atmospherics constructed for home listening - "trip hop" quickly became the music of choice for chill-out rooms when ambient fell from favour. The term quickly caught on to describe everything from Portishead and Tricky, to DJ Shadow and Coldcut (much to the chagrin of many of these artists, who were all making completely different music). Despite being a completely fabricated genre, it became one of the first commercially significant and successful types of dance music. Many albums regularly find their way to the top of the indie charts in the U.K, while artists such as DJ Shadow, Tricky, the Sneaker Pimps, and Massive Attack have become the first in the new wave of dance-based acts to achieve considerable success in America"
